Short Bio

Tyler Guzmán is a versatile clarinetist, educator, arts advocate, and aspiring marketing manager based in San Antonio, Texas. With a multifaceted career rooted in performance and education, Tyler is committed to enriching his local arts community through meaningful musical experiences, collaboration, and mentorship.

As a performer, Tyler brings both classical and contemporary works to life through solo, chamber, and orchestral engagements. He has appeared as a soloist with the Colorado Mesa Symphony Orchestra and the Four Seasons Orchestra, performing major works such as Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto and von Weber’s Clarinet Concerto No. 2. He is also a champion of new music, having premiered Miguel del Águila’s Transoceánica at ClarinetFest 2019 and Silence for clarinet and orchestra in San Antonio, TX.

Tyler performs regularly with several ensembles, including the Prickly Pear Clarinet Ensemble—where he also serves as a board member—River City Winds, and the Symphony of the Hills orchestra in Kerrville, TX. He also frequently joins the Heart of Texas Concert Band, and recently appeared with the Orchestra of the Incarnate Word, showcasing works by Mozart and Poulenc.

A dedicated educator, Tyler maintains a thriving private studio and co-directs the Mini Pears Clarinet Ensemble, a student-based group focused on building community through music. He frequently leads masterclasses, sectionals, and clinics in schools across San Antonio. His previous work as a band director in Arizona and the San Antonio Independent School District earned recognition for cultivating strong, collaborative music programs.

Tyler holds degrees from Arizona State University and Colorado Mesa University, where he studied under pedagogues including Robert Spring, Joshua Gardner, Adam Ballif, Stephen Page, and Jun Watabe.

A Coloradan by birth but a Texan by choice, Tyler Guzmán is a versatile clarinetist, educator, arts advocate, and aspiring marketing manager in the San Antonio, TX area. Through his multifaceted career, Tyler continues to enrich the cultural landscapes of San Antonio and beyond, inspiring audiences and students alike with his passion for music and education.

Tyler's dedication to education is evident in his thriving private studio, where he has had the privilege to mentor students who have achieved success in competitions, All-State ensembles, and collegiate music programs. Tyler also co-directs the Mini Pears Clarinet Ensemble, a student-based group committed to developing young musicians through collaboration and performance. He frequently collaborates with local schools, offering masterclasses and sectional coaching throughout the San Antonio area. Tyler takes pride in his past work as a band director in Arizona and in the San Antonio Independent School District, where he was recognized for developing comprehensive programs that emphasized musical excellence, the value of collaboration within ensembles, and cultivating an appreciation for the arts.

As a performer, Tyler is known for his expressive artistry and commitment to both classical repertoire and contemporary works. He has performed staples such as von Weber’s Concerto for Clarinet no. 2 with the Colorado Mesa Symphony Orchestra and Mozart’s Concerto for Clarinet in A major, K. 622 with the Four Seasons Orchestra in Scottsdale, AZ. Tyler was also a featured soloist during the 2014 Colorado Music Educators Association conference alongside the Colorado Mesa Wind Symphony, performing Rimsky-Korsakov’s Flight of the Bumblebee. His passion for new music has led him to premiere compositions by several notable composers including Kimberly Archer, Daniel Kellog, Julie Giroux, Michael Markowski, Roshanne Etezady, and Randall Standridge. He also has performed with world-renowned artists and ensembles such as Timothy McAllister, Project Trio, JD Shaw, Lisa Pegher, and Paradise Winds. In 2019, Tyler premiered Miguel del Águila’s Transoceánica Tyler premiered at the International Clarinet Association’s ClarinetFest 2019, as well as del Águila’s Silence for clarinet and orchestra, which was premiered in 2022 by Tyler.

In addition to his solo and orchestral endeavors, Tyler is an active chamber musician. He is a performer and board member for the Prickly Pear Clarinet Ensemble, which is slated to premiere Five Dances for Five Clarinets for clarinet choir at the ICA’s ClarinetFest 2025. He also performs with River City Winds, the Symphony of the Hills orchestra in Kerrville, TX, and in the Heart of Texas Concert Band, where he presented Mendelssohn’s Konzertstück No. 1, op. 113 alongside his husband, fellow clarinetist Shaun Guzmán.

He recently appeared with the Orchestra of the Incarnate Word in March 2024, performing Mozart’s famous Clarinet Concerto, and Francis Poulenc’s Sonata for Clarinet and Piano this past December at the University of the Incarnate Word’s Poulenc Festival.

Tyler completed his doctoral coursework at Arizona State University—where he also obtained his Master of Music degree—and is under the tutelage of Robert Spring and Joshua Gardner. Tyler previously studied at Colorado Mesa University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music degree while studying with Adam Ballif, Stephen Page, and Jun Watabe. Other teachers include Thomas Hess and Debbie Wilson.
